Now, phenomenology is a branch of philosophy that studies conscious experience and perception—how things appear to us in our minds, rather than just the objective reality of things themselves. A quick history:  It was founded by philosopher Edmund Husserl in the early 20th century.

And later expanded on by Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty.

 

Husserl’s idea was we should temporarily set aside assumptions about the external world and focus purely on how things appear to consciousness.

 

Think about holding a cup of coffee. A scientist might describe the cup in terms of its material, weight, and temperature.

A phenomenologist asks, “How does this experience feel?”—the warmth in your hands, the rich aroma, the sense of comfort or alertness it brings.”It’s a deep, mind-bending way of looking at the world—like stepping inside your own perception and seeing how reality shows up for you.

So, how does that relate to copy?

Because one of the biggest hurdles in sales copy is distraction. People are constantly interrupted by phones, social media, or their own thoughts.

 

Phenomenology-based copy eliminates these distractions by guiding the reader into a narrative or experience that unfolds seamlessly.

 

It’s a powerful technique that draws readers into a deep state of absorption—where they become so immersed in the experience of the message that they forget about everything else around them.

 

When done right, this technique makes a promotion impossible to ignore and can create a heightened emotional state where buying the product feels like the natural next step.
